iPhone OS 4.0 Beta Hands On

On April 8th, 2010 Apple announced the new features of OS 4.0 and released it to developers to beta test. I have access to the beta and I’d like to share some screenshot with you to pictorial illustrate some of the 100+ new features in this new operating system.

Email:
One of the simplest yet useful features of OS 4.0 is the unified inbox. Many of use have several email accounts and being able to access your messages from one inbox instead of different ones is a time saver.

As you can see, your messages still look very similar to older versions of the software. However, if you look at the first message you see a number “2″ which signifies there are multiple messages in that thread.

When you click on an email that is part of a thread, you get a list view of all the email in that particular thread. Another time saver when dealing with a large volume of messages.

Camera:
Although I dislike digital zoom, having the option on your iPhone is a nice addition. All you have to do is double click on the screen and a zoom control appears atop the live preview.

Gamecenter:
Apple is launching a new application called gamecenter to unify and track your gaming achievements. With features such as matchmaker and leaderboards, gamecenter aims to become your social gaming network of choice for iPhone.

Multitasking:
Multitasking is the big features of OS 4.0. Apple is finally allowing users to run 3rd party applications in the background. Unfortunately, as mrbit points out, apple isn’t truly allowing applications to run in the background but rather is allowing certain application types permission to run a service in the background. So it is a multitasking solution, but it’s not a complete “free for all” like in Android or webOS.

Multitasking Video Walkthrough:

Folders:
Creating folders to organize applications is extremely easy. Simply drag one app onto another and a new folder is created. From there, you can drag more apps into the folder and rename it. Using folders, you are now able to store 2,000 apps on your device.

Backgrounds:
Although not a revolutionary feature, iPhone users have been asking for custom homescreen wallpapers since OS 1.0. Four incarnations later, users can choose any picture and use it as either the lockscreen background, homescreen background, or both.

Thanks for the 2 videos! ;)
I just can’t wait for the update to be released!!!
I have two questions, it would be great if you could help me out.
The first one is about the new multitasking feature. What I’d like to know is: When you for example play a game and than leave it by pressing the home button and go to another app and than double klick the home button and go back to the game, it will resume right from where you left it, right?
But what happens if you quit the game and than start it again from the homescreen like you normally would. Will this also resume the game from where you left it of or will this restart the game like on OS 3?

Secound question:
How is the performance of the Beta compared to OS 3.1.3?
Does it feel snappy when you use it? Does it crash a lot?

Thank you so much in advantage!
Luca

Michael, in case you haven’t figured it out yet. The reason developers need to modify their apps to support multitasking is to preserve battery life. It’s the whole reason Apple pretty much redefined multitasking with iPhone OS 4.0.

Without the special API’s for multitasking apps could multitask just like OS X. However, your battery wouldn’t last but maybe an hour. Apple doesn’t want this and neither do I.

I know someone who has jailbroken his phone and he reports that battery life is all but nonexistent with Pro Switcher multitasking is iPhone.

If you watched the presentation Apple did for the new OS, you would have seen exactly why the API’s are so important. Maybe you should go download the video on iTunes and check it out.

[...] and the new Game Center. This video, though light on depth, will give you an idea on how these features work in practice. I know one feature that I would like to see has not yet been addressed: the ability to rename Bluetooth devices. I use three Griffin BlueTrip Bluetooth receivers at home and when looking at the Bluetooth devices in the current version of the iPhone OS, all three come up with the same name and can’t be changed. I’d like the ability to rename Bluetooth devices so I can get a handle on which BlueTrip is which. It’s a minor point, but one that would make life quite a bit easier for me. I’m sure that this feature getting into OS 4.0 is about as likely as my winning the lottery, but if anyone from Apple is reading this… What features did you see that were left out of OS 4.0 and would mean the world to you?TUAWiPhone 4.0 beta walkthrough video in English originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 11 Apr 2010 18:30:00 EST. Who do you actualy have access to the BETA of OS 4 software and I dont have. Explain me Michael!

@botsisanargyros: He paid the $99 to get into the iPhone developer program. That it. Paying members of the iPhone developer program have access to the SDK as well as the actual OS that they can install on a device for testing.

In relation to os4.0, things that i’d like to see would be, the ability to delete any icon e.g stocks, and to be able to block phone numbers in your contacts or recents numbers.
